Superb melody from the third movement of Brahms' Third Symphony sung by the cellos (key of C fourth). The violins then take it up again (G clef) with counter-song from the cellos relayed by the violas (third C clef). Central episode in major before the reprise by the horn to which flute and oboe are added. The nuances and a harmony rich in grace notes underline the almost painful expression.
