OFFENBACH J. : Ronde des carabiniers

Parlé-rythmé. Récitatif. Deux croches et triolets.
Premier cycle, 4° année

Extracted from the opera buffa "Les Brigands", the Ronde des carabiniers alone constitutes a veritable scene in which the clever brigands play ridiculous carabiniers (dialogue between two choirs and a soloist). The use of spoken rhythm (a somewhat heavy juxtaposition of groups of two eighth notes and triplets, importance of silences) gives a humorous turn accentuated by an opposition with the very serious-looking recitative of the leader of the brigands. The comical insistence on a word through repetition (les bottes, les bottes les bottes..., on the rhythm: eighth note and two sixteenth notes) is very characteristic of Offenbach's art of developing an entire sequence from a simple detail.
