The rhythm of the pavane is written on a line, below the staff. Two phrases of eight measures in anacrusis of half a beat, one open, the other concluding. The hesitation between subtonic and sensitive is the mark of the stage of the evolution of musical language, between modal and tonal. The harmonization is based on the passamezzo bass, widely used at the time.
