Excerpt from the opera Tannhäuser, act. III sc. 1, "The Pilgrims' Chorus", exact title "Chor der älteren Pilger" (Chorus of the Old Pilgrims), is entrusted by Wagner to the men alone, divided tenors, divided basses. The version for 4 mixed voices proposed by l'Oiseau d'Or strictly respects the composer's text: only octave changes and permutations between the voices have been made for reasons of tessitura. Similarly, the orchestra's piano accompaniment, very developed in its central part, is rigorously faithful. In addition, a solo soprano voice is optionally proposed: this is the character of Elisabeth, witness to the pilgrims' passage. Brief expressive interventions that may not be sung: in this case, the piano part alone can be kept or even the corresponding few bars deleted. In an opera production, the chorus comes from the back of the theatre, passes on stage and disappears backstage. Moving the chorus is not easy in concert, but it is always possible to play on nuances. (automatic translation)
