From the very opening of the Lied "Die Post" (The Post) - part of the "Winterreise" (Winter Journey) cycle - the call of a post-horn rings out, awakening the traveler's memories and inner turmoil: his heart trembling with emotion at the dashed hope of a letter from his beloved. The two verses alternate between an anxious rhythm and a mood of sorrowful calm.
Faithful to the spirit of the original work, this brief yet magnificent Lied is presented here in a transcription for mixed-voice quartet and piano (retaining Schubert's original piano part). The text is by the German poet Wilhelm Müller. L'Oiseau d'Or also provides a French translation with prosody that closely mirrors the German original, fitting naturally with the musical phrasing.
