This is the second of three melodies comprising the cycle "Don Quichotte à Dulcinée", a poem by Paul Morand, in a spirit reminiscent of medieval courtly love. This cycle is Ravel's last work (1932). The "Chanson épique" resembles a prayer in which Cervantes' hero asks the saints and the "Madonna of the Blue Mantle" to bless the blade of his sword, whose qualities he compares to those of his lady, Dulcinea.
A superb melody, entrusted in a gradual progression to the altos and tenors in unison, joined by the basses and then the entire choir. The rhythm is a five-beat Basque zortziko dance. In this transcription for choir and piano, the simple yet quintessentially ravelian harmony is strictly preserved.
