The main theme, inspired by the universally known “Frère Jacques” canon, is strangely presented by a solo double bass over a regular movement of timpani. The comparison with the original melody is interesting: transformations by minorization and by adding passing notes and embroidery (In the same collection, see the TRADITIONAL file: Frère Jacques). Starting from the lower instruments, the theme gradually invades the entire orchestra with the notable exception of the violins. Malher intermittently superimposes an ironic motif played separately by the oboe. (automatic translation)
